Whether it is called wearable technology, wearable devices, or simply wearables, the current trend in electronic devices is to design machines that may be comfortably worn on the body. The most common way to do this is to somehow incorporate the device into clothing or fashion accessories that people are already wearing anyway. This technology serves a similar purposes to commonplace items such as iPhones and laptops, but are even more convenient and in some cases more effective as well. For example, sensory and scanning features allow wearable technology to perform better in the fields of biofeedback and physiological tracking functionality than any cell phone could hope to do.
As it becomes more mainstream, wearable technology figures to impact a variety of fields, including music, gaming, finance, transportation, education, aging, fitness, health, and medicine. The goal remains constant across all of these fields: incorporating functional electronics and computers into the everyday lives of all individuals. As with many other technological advancements, wearable technology was initially utilized by the military for a range of applications, with an emphasis on healthcare. It will expand beyond these humble beginnings by a staggering degree.
Many analysts are predicting that wearable technology will revolutionize the social landscape as it penetrates all faucets of human society. If that seems extreme, consider how commonplace it has become to go outside and see somebody interacting with a portable gadget. That was completely unheard of just 20 short years ago. Wearables will revolutionize the social landscape again, in all likelihood rendering most of our current portable devices obsolete in the process.
